PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMME

The BA Communications Programme is dedicated to promoting higher standards of competence and integrity through the provision of quality tuition for students to acquire relevant skills and knowledge at all levels and across all sectors of the practice of Communication.

The programme provides a sound grounding in the theoretical concepts, ethical and practical skills needed for working in the communication industry. The programme is designed in a way which enables students to acquire both the practical skills as well as the academic knowledge required for further and higher education in the area.

Students, as part of programme, are also given basic academic and practical skills in Psychology, in addition to basic skills in information and communication technology and foreign languages.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The aim of the programme is to give students a good foundation in the theoretical and practical knowledge of communication and the communication industry.

The specific objectives of the communications programme are to: 

  •  Provide students with academic and specialised knowledge and a critical understanding of the practice of communication in all sectors.
  •  Enable students to apply their gained knowledge and skills at their workplaces
  •  Develop students’ independent learning and transferable skills
  •  Help students to develop career plans and professional development paths.
  •  Learn the basic concepts and approaches of the study of communication and its application in everyday life.
  •  Provide training in the different media such as the electronic and the print media, both theoretical and practical training as a foundation to ground students in an in-depth study of various types of media.
  •  Give the student a foundational and biblically derived understanding of theory and practice in communication studies.
  •  Prepare the student to apply communication skills and to assist others in various church, community, business, government, and social settings to recognize and apply the principles of effective communication to address peculiar problems be they individual, communal, institutional or organizational.
  •  Provide the basis for a greater degree of in-depth evaluation and use of communication principles as these relate specifically to personal spiritual growth and effectiveness in communication with others.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The multidisciplinary nature of the course encourages flexibility, which is a key virtue in today’s changing world. A degree in Communication Studies covers a broad range of subjects from the highly practical to theoretical. Students can develop a variety of skills that are extremely useful in many employment areas including journalism, public relations and advertising. Moreover, graduate can work in various sectors such as PR/Communication Consultancies, marketing organisations, media companies, the Civil Service among others. 

INTERNSHIP

The Unit also ensures that students are placed in various organisations for them to do their practical attachments. This ensures that the students gain the necessary industry experience before they complete the course.

Core areas of study include, but not limited to, the following:

YEAR 1

Courses in year one are generic hence compulsory for every student. However, communication students will also do the following:
