PUC hosts Launch of Safeguarding the Environment Project

The Pentecost University College hosted the launch of the Safeguarding the Environment Project aimed at sensitizing communities within the Ga Central Municipality for improved sanitation conditions and spearheaded by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ga Central Municipal Assembly.

According to the Municipal Director of NCCE at the Ga Central Municipal Office, Mrs. Cynthia Anima Boadu, “students within Ga Central Municipality will be the Sanitation Ambassadors for the Project for its effective implementation”. She added that the students will lead in the education and clean-up activities on quarterly bases.

Officially launching the Project, Ms. Josephine Nkrumah, Chairperson of NCCE, charged all stakeholders to be positively radical about the management of waste to ensure attainment of the Sustainable Development Goal on Clean Water and Sanitation.

Ghana’s sanitation situation is in an appalling state and has lingered on for years. Ghana is currently ranked 7th at the bottom of the sanitation ladder in the world and 2nd dirtiest in West Africa according to a publication by Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) report of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF).

Subsequently, the Ga Central Municipal Office of the NCCE in fulfilling one of its mandates to formulate, implement and oversee Programmes intended to inculcate in the citizenry an awareness of civic responsibilities and appreciation of their rights and obligations as free people initiated the Safeguarding the Environment Project Focusing on Community Sanitation.

The stakeholders of the Project will be the Ga Municipal Assembly, the Police Service, Heads of Departments, GPRTU, Religious Groups, Waste Collectors, Traditional Leaders and Opinion Leaders.
