Information Literacy and Practice
The research field Information Literacy and Practice covers the wide range of activities, processes and competencies that affect individuals’ and groups of people’s knowledge organization, information seeking and learning in everyday, academic and work related contexts.
Research within this field will especially focus on the development of theories, strategies and methods that may improve the information literacy and practice among individuals, groups and organizations. In addition, the aim is to pave the way for an efficient and creative use of information and information systems. Information literacy includes individuals’ knowledge of relevant tools, methods and techniques in relation to knowledge organization, information seeking and learning, but it encompasses many other competencies as well. In the broad sense of the term, information literacy also implies an ability to formulate and manage an information need (intellectually and physically) as well as being able to critically apply and evaluate the relevance, consistency and implications of information in practice. This usually requires an awareness of general logical traits in combination with the specific traits that relate to the particular knowledge domain of the information. Likewise, an ability to observe the rhetorical aspects of the communication of information, such as the appeal forms (logos, ethos, pathos) being used, the topical and stylistic features etc., is also an important part of becoming and being an information literate.
The research in Information Literacy and Practice involves, among other things, the following focus areas:
- Domain analysis
- Groups’ information management and social technologies
- Information behaviour and practice
- Learning, including every day, practical and lifelong learning
- Personal Information Management (PIM)
- Studies of relevance and critical source evaluation
- Rhetorical aspects, e.g. forms of appeal, topics and other persuasive and stylistic characteristics
