ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMES
Pentecost University (PU) admits students in accordance with the approved national requirements set by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
Candidates seeking admission must have obtained one of the following qualifications:
- Credit passes in three (3) core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies, and three (3) relevant elective subjects in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE)
- Credit passes in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
- Credit passes in the General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE)
- Five (5) credit passes (Grade 6) in the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination, including English Language and Mathematics
- A Post-Secondary Teachers’ Certificate ‘A’ issued by the Ministry of Education of Ghana
- Any relevant professional qualification approved by the Academic Board
- Mature candidates who successfully pass a special qualifying examination may also be considered for admission.
Additionally, candidates must meet the specific departmental requirements as approved by the University.
MINIMUM AGGREGATE
To be eligible for admission into the four-year Bachelor’s degree programmes, candidates must obtain an aggregate score not exceeding:
- Twenty-four (24)in the three core and three elective subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) or General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE)
- Thirty-six (36)in the three core and three elective subjects at the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
A pass in the SSSCE/GBCE or WASSCE is defined based on the following grade interpretations:

SSSCE/GBCE/WASSCE candidates shall be admitted to Level 100 (First Year) of the four-year Bachelor’s Degree programme.
GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR LEVEL 100
The general entry requirements for admission into Level 100 of first degree programmes for SSSCE/WASSCE or GBCE candidates are as follows:
- Three (3) credit passes in the core subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science (for science-related programmes) or Social Studies (for non-science-related programmes)
- Three (3) credit passes in relevant elective subjects.
Note: Candidates applying for the B.Sc. Actuarial Science programme must have a credit pass in Elective Mathematics as part of the three (3) relevant elective subjects.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS BY QUALIFICATION TYPE
WASSCE Candidates
- Credit Passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects, comprising:
- Three (3) core subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science (for science-related programmes) or Social Studies (for non-science-related programmes)
- Three (3) relevant elective subjects
GBCE Candidates
- Credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects, comprising:
- Three (3) core subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, and either Integrated Science or Social Studies
- Three (3) relevant elective subjects
SSSCE Candidates
- Credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects, comprising:
- Three (3) core subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science (for science-related programmes) or Social Studies (for non-science-related programmes)
- Three (3) relevant elective subjects
Unacceptable Grades for Admission Purposes
- SSSCE/GBCE:E and F
- WASSCE:D7, E8, and F9
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR B.Sc. NURSING
PU admits candidates to the B.Sc. Nursing programme based on the approved national standards set by the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC). Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
SSSCE/WASSCE
Applicants seeking admission to Level 100 with SSSCE/WASSCE qualifications must have credit passes in three (3) core subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, and three (3) relevant elective subjects from the following:
- General Science:Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Elective Mathematics
- General Arts:Economics, Government, Christian Religious Studies, Islamic Studies, History, French, Geography, General Knowledge in Art, Literature in English, Elective Mathematics, Ghanaian Language
- Home Economics:Food and Nutrition, Management in Living, General Knowledge in Art, Elective Mathematics, Economics, Chemistry, French
- Agricultural Science:General Agriculture, Elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, French
GCE Ordinary and Advanced Levels (Foreign Candidates)
The University shall admit only foreign candidates with GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level qualifications in Science.
State Registered Nurse (SRN)
The University shall admit State Registered Nurses (SRNs) with a minimum of five (5) years of work experience. In addition, candidates must successfully pass an interview. Qualified candidates shall be admitted to Level 300.
Holders of Diploma in Nursing (Registered General Nursing – RGN)
The University shall admit RGN candidates from recognised and accredited institutions with the following requirements:
- At least two (2) years of work experience
- A pass in the licensure examination conducted by the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC) of Ghana or other recognised bodies
- Fulfillment of the minimum admission requirements for tertiary institutions
- Successful completion of an interview
Successful candidates are admitted to Level 300.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR B.SC. CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT AND BSC. QUANTITY SURVEYING & CONSTRUCTION ECONOMICS
Candidates applying to these programmes must meet the following entry requirements:
SSSCE/WASSCE
Credit passes in three (3) core subjects, namely:
- English Language
- Core Mathematics
- Integrated Science
Plus, credit passes in three (3) relevant elective subjects, including:
- Elective Mathematics
- Any two (2) additional subjects from the following:
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Geography
- Economics
- Technical Drawing
- Building Construction
OR
Have WASSCE/SSSCE credit passes in three (3) elective subjects; specifically:
- Elective Mathematics
- Any two (2) of the following electives:
- Economics
- Geography
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Technical Drawing
- Building Construction
Mature Entrance
Candidates who do not meet the standard entry requirements above may apply for admission through the Mature Entrance option. Such candidates must satisfy the following qualifications:
- Have at least three (3) years of work experience
- Be at least 25 years old at the time of application
- Have five (5) credit passes at the GCE ‘O’ Level, including English Language, Mathematics, and a Science subject (Physics, Chemistry, or General Science)
Selection Process
Candidates will be selected through the PU Mature Entrance Examination (MEE), which consists of:
- English Test (Essay, Comprehension, Grammar, and Usage)
- General Paper (Quantitative Methods, Critical and Logical Thinking, and Current Affairs)
A candidate must obtain a minimum of Grade “C” (50%) in each paper to qualify for admission. Successful candidates shall be admitted to Level 100.
Construction Technician Certificate (CTC II/III)
Candidates who have completed the final part of the Construction Technician’s Certificate (CTC) and have at least five (5) years of work experience in a related field at a senior position are eligible for admission. Successful candidates shall be admitted to Level 200.
POST GRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Qualifications for Admission into MPhil/PhD Programmes
Candidates applying for admission into an MPhil or PhD programme must possess one of the following qualifications:
- a) An upper-second-class degree from a Ghanaian university, accompanied by five years of significant post-graduation work experience in the relevant discipline; or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in a subject appropriate to the programme of study.
- b) A Master’s degree with a dissertation component, along with two years of relevant experience.
- c) For candidates with grades below Second Class Upper, eight or more years of significant experience in the discipline.
- d) A registrable qualification awarded by a Ghanaian university in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Studies, Herbal Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Physician Assistantship Studies, or Optometry; or a qualification of an equivalent standard awarded by a university outside Ghana, appropriate to the programme of study.
- e) A postgraduate taught degree from a Ghanaian university, or an equivalent overseas qualification, in a subject appropriate to the programme of study.
- f) A professional or other qualification obtained through written examinations and recognised by the University as an appropriate entrance qualification for the research degree in question.
- g) Research experience gained in the workplace or a similar environment, deemed relevant by the Graduate Schools’ Management Committee in the context of the proposed research topic. Such experience is typically expected to be supplemented by an appropriate academic qualification.
- h) An alternative qualification approved for this purpose by the Graduate Schools’ Management Committee.
Additional Requirements
Candidates may be subject to additional requirements beyond the minimum qualifications, which may include:
- a) Qualifying Examination:Candidates may be required to pass a qualifying examination to demonstrate their readiness for advanced study and research. This examination may assess knowledge and understanding of the subject area relevant to the intended programme.
- b) English Language Proficiency:Candidates may also need to provide evidence of proficiency in written and spoken English to ensure they can fully engage with academic materials, communicate effectively, and participate in academic discussions and activities.
Provisional Enrollment
In exceptional cases, a candidate required to meet certain conditions before formal admission to an MPhil programme may be allowed to enrol as a research student. During this period, which may last up to six months, the candidate will engage in guided study and/or research. The purpose of this period is to provide an opportunity to fulfil the necessary admission conditions, which may include passing examinations, completing prerequisite courses, or meeting language proficiency requirements.
This period does not normally count toward the minimum period of study required for the MPhil degree. If the candidate has not fulfilled the required conditions by the end of the six-month period, they will usually be required to terminate their studies.
Qualifications for Admission into MBA, MSc, and MA Programmes
Admission requirements for MSc, MA, and MBA programmes may vary slightly depending on the specific programme. General guidelines are as follows:
MSc and MA Programmes
- a) A Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a recognised institution.
b) Attainment of at least a Second Class Lower in the first degree.
c) Possession of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in any discipline.
d) Minimum GPA requirements, typically ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
e) Some programmes may require specific undergraduate coursework or prerequisites.
f) Letters of recommendation.
g) Statement of purpose or motivation letter.
h) CV or resume.
i) Possibly, performance in an entrance examination or interview.
MBA Programmes
- a) A Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a recognised institution.
b) Attainment of at least a Second Class Lower in the first degree.
c) Possession of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in any discipline.
d) Minimum GPA requirements, often ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
e) Work experience (usually a minimum of two to three years is preferred).
f) Letters of recommendation.
g) Statement of purpose or motivation letter.
h) CV or resume.
i) Possibly, performance in an entrance examination such as the GMAT or GRE.
j) Some programmes may require an interview.
GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (GCE) ADVANCED LEVEL
The University shall admit candidates with:
- Passes in three (3) subjects at the GCE Advanced Level, with at least one pass at Grade D or better
- Credit passes (Grade 6) in five (5) GCE Ordinary Level subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, and:
- A Science subject (for non-science students)
- An Arts subject (for science students)
NB: The University no longer accepts the West African Examinations Council GCE Ordinary and Advanced Levels for admission. Candidates with such qualifications are encouraged to apply through the Mature Students’ Selection programme.
ADVANCED BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (ABCE)
Candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Full Diploma Certificate in ABCE
- Credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies in GBCE, SSSCE, or WASSCE
Qualified candidates will be considered for admission at Level 200.
HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND)
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold an HND certificate with a minimum classification of Second Class (Lower Division)
- Possess WASSCE qualifications, including:
- Six (6) passes (A1-D7) in all subjects, including English Language and Mathematics
- Credit passes (C6 or better) in three (3) relevant elective subjects related to the area of specialization
- Possess at least two years of post-HND relevant work experience
Qualified candidates will be considered for admission at Level 200.
OTHER DIPLOMA QUALIFICATIONS
Diploma qualifications deemed equivalent to an HND, obtained from an institution accredited by GTEC or a foreign institution recognised by GTEC, shall be considered for admission at Level 200.
Note: Candidates with a Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) are not eligible for admission into first degree programmes.
FOREIGN/PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
All foreign and professional certificates, as well as any other qualifications beyond those specified above, must be submitted to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for evaluation to establish their equivalency and determine eligibility for admission to PU.
NB: The American SAT, TOEFL, and similar qualifications alone do not meet the entry requirements.
HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) IN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY
Candidates applying with an HND in Building Technology must meet the following requirements:
- Hold an HND certificate in Building Technology with First Class Honours or Second Class Honours (Upper Division) from a recognised institution
- Have a minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience
- Have successfully passed the required SSSCE or WASSCE examinations as indicated above
- Complete a one-semester bridging course organised by the university
Successful candidates may be admitted to Level 300 as Weekend students.
MATURE APPLICANTS
Mature applicants who do not meet the standard admission requirements may be considered for admission if they meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least 25 years old at the time of application (proof of age is required via birth certificate or any legitimate documentary evidence)
- Must pass a competitive examination in English (Essay, Comprehension, Grammar, and Usage) and an aptitude test
A candidate is deemed to have passed the examination and qualifies for admission if they obtain a minimum of Grade “D” (50%) in each paper and also pass an interview.
Successful candidates shall be admitted to Level 100.
TRANSFER STUDENTS
- The University admits students who are already enrolled in other accredited universities, both local and foreign. Such students shall take all required courses from their respective departments in accordance with the University’s course structure and shall start at the appropriate level of admission.
- A student transferring from another university to Pentecost University must complete a minimum study period of six (6) semesters as a full-time student to be eligible for graduation.
- The classification of the degree shall be based solely on courses taken at Pentecost University.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Pentecost University welcomes applications from international students. The admission requirements and procedures for international students are the same as or equivalent to those outlined for all PU programmes.
Acceptable admission qualifications include:
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)
- American Grades 12 and 13 examinations
- Other external qualifications deemed equivalent to SSSCE/WASSCE/GBCE and GCE
Candidates with external qualifications are admitted to Level 100. In addition, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in English at the SSSCE/WASSCE level or its equivalent. Pentecost University offers a six-month English Proficiency course for candidates who do not possess the required English language background.
All foreign professional certificates and any other qualifications not specified above must be evaluated by GTEC to determine their equivalence and eligibility for admission to tertiary institutions in Ghana.
Additionally, International Students shall:
a) Pass an interview and an English proficiency test administered by the University
b) Submit their passports and other travel documents for verification
c) Provide a police clearance report from their home country
d) Cooperate with the International Students Office to register with the Ghana Police Service
e) Ensure that all necessary immigration and visa documents are duly regularised to study in Ghana
