VC SPEAKS AT 2023 JOSPONG LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
The Vice-Chancellor of Pentecost University, Prof. Kwabena Agyapong-Kodua delivered a keynote address at the 2023 Jospong Leadership Conference. The conference held for the top leadership of the diverse subsidiaries of the Jospong Group of Companies took place at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Gomoa Fetteh, near Accra.
The Vice-Chancellor spoke on the theme of the conference “People, Process and Performance” with an emphasis on “Motivation and Coaching.” He described the elements of motivation, and the originality index of motivation and proposed the use of Artificial Intelligent tools that can personalize motivation for staff members.
Speaking in detail, Prof. Agyapong-Kodua said motivation is bi-direction. By this, he explained that staff at all levels should recognize that individuals beneath and above them in the organizational hierarchy need motivation. With this, he said they can motivate those they supervise and also encourage their bosses.
With references to the Holy Bible and scholarly authorities on motivation, such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the VC advocated the use of what he called the “originality index of needs” as needs are causally related but vary from person to person and degrees of importance.
To strengthen the originality index model, he proposed the design and use of tailor-made technology products that can intelligently predict the motivational needs of individual staff. He said, such a system should contain the bio-data of staff members and include elements such as their interests, religious views, political views, gender, and career plan among others. “Some of these elements largely determine what motivates a person, and the leader or the HR Manager with such information is better placed to motivate the individual staff in a manner that truly motivates. ”.. he said.
As an experienced business leader, Prof. Agyapong-Kodua shared personal experiences with such tools while working with multinational corporations. He also expressed the preparedness of Pentecost university to develop them for the Jospong Group.
On the soft aspect, Prof. Agyapong- Kodua urged the leaders of Jospong Group of Companies and other corporate organizations to take a keen interest in motivation as a “demotivated group will lead to poor performance while a motivated group achieve more than the resources provided to them will reasonably achieve.” He also urged that “none should be the voice that disintegrates the team, whether in dealing with their junior or senior colleagues. Instead, “be the voice that rallies support and motivate all others.” Prof. Agyapong-Kodua concluded.
