Pentecost University has appointed Professor Barry Mann, an accomplished medical educator from the United States and a retired surgeon, as the Dean of the Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences (FHAS).

The appointment underscores the University’s commitment to strengthening health professions education and advancing its vision of becoming a distinguished centre for healthcare training, research, and innovation.

Professor Mann brings decades of experience in academic medicine, clinical practice, and institutional leadership. Throughout his distinguished career, he has served as Director of a Surgical Residency Training Programme and as Chief Academic Officer of a major health system in the United States. He has played a pivotal role in the education and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows, while providing strategic leadership in curriculum development, clinical training, faculty organisation, academic governance, and accreditation preparation.

In his new role, Professor Mann will provide strategic leadership for the Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences, guiding the continued growth of its academic programmes, strengthening research and clinical education, and fostering collaborations that will enhance the University’s contribution to healthcare delivery and professional training.

Beyond his responsibilities as Dean, Professor Mann will lead Pentecost University’s strategic initiative to establish the Pentecost University School of Medicine. His extensive experience in medical education, coupled with his strong professional network among American healthcare leaders and leading medical education organisations, is expected to play a significant role in developing a rigorous, globally competitive, and sustainable medical education programme at the University.

Professor Mann has earned national recognition in the United States for his outstanding contributions to surgical education. He is a recipient of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Robert P. Glaser Distinguished Teacher of Medicine Award presented by the American Association of Medical Colleges, as well as the Distinguished Educator in Surgery Award from the Association for Surgical Education.

An accomplished scholar, Professor Mann has authored numerous scientific and educational publications. He is the author of the surgical textbook SURGERY: A Competency-Based Companion, which later evolved into a comprehensive medical textbook series with additional volumes in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Medicine, for which he served as the series editor.

During his tenure as Chief Academic Officer of the Main Line Health System, Professor Mann championed several innovative initiatives aimed at advancing educational excellence and promoting equitable healthcare for underserved communities. Among the most notable is The Health Career Collaborative, a mentorship programme launched in Philadelphia in 2007 that mobilises volunteer medical students to mentor high school students from underserved communities who are at risk of dropping out. The initiative has since grown into a nationwide movement involving 47 medical schools across 40 cities in the United States and serves students in more than 50 under-resourced high schools.

The Vice-Chancellor of Pentecost University, Apostle Professor Kwabena Agyapong-Kodua, expressed confidence that Professor Mann’s wealth of experience and visionary leadership will significantly advance the Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences and accelerate the University’s efforts to establish a world-class School of Medicine.

Professor Mann’s appointment marks another significant milestone in Pentecost University’s strategic agenda to expand its footprint in healthcare education, strengthen academic excellence, and produce competent, ethical, and transformational healthcare professionals equipped to serve society both locally and globally.

The University community warmly congratulates Professor Barry Mann on his appointment and wishes him God’s wisdom, strength, and success as he assumes this important leadership role.
